The best word to describe Duo Ruut’s music is catchy. AnnLisett Rebane and Katariina Kivi are two young Estonian women who jointly play a single Kannel (a traditional Estonian zither), innovatively subverting traditional songs to create distinctive and striking folk music. Their first record, “Tuule sõnad” (“Words of the Wind”), won ‘Debut Album of the Year’ in the Estonian Ethno Music Awards 2020. Every track on the album offers us breathing space. Each vibration is impactful. Duo Ruut’s music, performed live, is essentially minimalist, but filled with contemporary and imaginative compositions, which sometimes lead us to an almost hypnotic and meditative state, that is extremely captivating due to its high level of synchronicity.
